They are the foundation of human health. At Bristol Myers Squibb, that connection isn’t a footnote. It’s woven into our mission: because you cannot have healthy patients on an unhealthy planet.<\/p>\n

This Earth Day, under the theme\u00a0“Patients & Planet: Healthier Together,”<\/strong>\u00a0BMS employees around the world are turning that conviction into action\u2014through site events, volunteer initiatives, education sessions, and everyday choices that, multiplied across a global workforce, add up to something extraordinary. At the heart of much of this energy is\u00a0GoGreen<\/strong>, BMS’s employee-led sustainability network, whose members bring passion, creativity, and purpose to the company’s environmental goals every single day.<\/p>\n

A Mission That Goes Beyond the Lab<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When most people think of a biopharma company, they picture scientists, clinical trials, and cutting-edge therapies. Less visible\u2014but equally vital\u2014is the responsibility that comes with operating at scale in a world under environmental pressure. Manufacturing medicines requires energy, water, and raw materials. Every operational decision carries an environmental footprint.<\/p>\n

BMS has chosen to confront that reality head-on. Guided by a science-first approach, the company has set ambitious,\u00a0Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated goals<\/strong>: reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain, transitioning to 100% renewable electricity by 2030, reducing freshwater withdrawals, and reaching\u00a0net zero emissions by 2050<\/strong>. It lives in R&D labs, manufacturing floors, engineering teams, and corporate offices alike. Jessica Srun, Senior Manager of Sustainability Enablement, captures this perfectly:<\/p>\n

“Sustainability is a team sport, and what has stood out to me is how the GoGreen team has helped translate enterprise sustainability goals into meaningful and tangible actions for our colleagues. From site-led waste reduction programs, scientists participating in the My Green Lab certification program, or employee education on sustainability, it’s great to see how colleagues across all functions\u2014from R&D to manufacturing to corporate offices\u2014are embedding sustainability into their day-to-day work.”<\/em><\/p>\n

That translation from global strategy to everyday action is no small feat. What GoGreen does is bring ambitious targets down to earth\u2014making sustainability something colleagues can see, touch, and participate in, regardless of their role or function.<\/p>\n

Real Stories of Impact<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Some of the most meaningful sustainability work at BMS happens in the field\u2014literally. Ross Kearney, Environmental Manager and GoGreen champion, describes a community initiative that captures the spirit of what employee-driven sustainability can look like:<\/p>\n

“We have engaged with a tidy towns committee since 2023\u2014a small volunteer group devoted to keeping their local area litter-free. In 2025, we hosted two events where we supported general clean-ups in the local village: litter picks, weeding, planting flowers. The committee is always extremely appreciative of our support, and the colleagues involved leave with a huge sense of pride having contributed.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That image\u2014BMS employees on their own time, working alongside community volunteers\u2014is a reminder that a company’s environmental commitments are only as real as the culture that upholds them. And culture is built one action, one conversation, one volunteer afternoon at a time.<\/p>\n

BMS is also delivering change at an operational scale. Masayuki Kato, Supervisor of EHS and Engineering PDS, points to a milestone that demonstrates how long-term ambition becomes near-term reality:<\/p>\n

“One initiative that made me especially proud was Aichi Site’s transition to carbon neutrality through 100% renewable energy as of April 1, 2026, combined with our ongoing annual tree-planting activities. These actions demonstrate both immediate impact and long-term commitment to environmental sustainability at the site level.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Site by site, decision by decision\u2014this is what the path to 2030 and 2050 actually looks like.<\/p>\n

When Purpose Meets Career<\/strong><\/h2>\n

For many BMS employees, sustainability isn’t something they observe from a distance. It’s something that has reshaped how they think about their work and their lives. Jessica Srun reflects:<\/p>\n
