Earth Day arrives each year as a collective pause—a moment to remember that the ground beneath our feet, the air we breathe, and the water we drink are not just resources. They are the foundation of human health. At Bristol Myers Squibb, that connection isn’t a footnote. It’s woven into our mission: because you cannot have healthy patients on an unhealthy planet.
This Earth Day, under the theme “Patients & Planet: Healthier Together,” BMS employees around the world are turning that conviction into action—through site events, volunteer initiatives, education sessions, and everyday choices that, multiplied across a global workforce, add up to something extraordinary. At the heart of much of this energy is GoGreen, BMS’s employee-led sustainability network, whose members bring passion, creativity, and purpose to the company’s environmental goals every single day.
A Mission That Goes Beyond the Lab
When most people think of a biopharma company, they picture scientists, clinical trials, and cutting-edge therapies. Less visible—but equally vital—is the responsibility that comes with operating at scale in a world under environmental pressure. Manufacturing medicines requires energy, water, and raw materials. Every operational decision carries an environmental footprint.
BMS has chosen to confront that reality head-on. Guided by a science-first approach, the company has set ambitious, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated goals: reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain, transitioning to 100% renewable electricity by 2030, reducing freshwater withdrawals, and reaching net zero emissions by 2050. These are binding commitments, measured and reported annually, with highlights from BMS’s 2025 Building a Better Future report showing continued momentum across climate and energy, water stewardship, waste reduction, and fleet transformation.
Progress is real—and it’s being driven by the people who show up every day committed to doing their jobs in a way that leaves the planet better than they found it.
Sustainability Is a Team Sport
One of the most powerful things about BMS’s approach to environmental responsibility is that it doesn’t live only in the boardroom. It lives in R&D labs, manufacturing floors, engineering teams, and corporate offices alike. Jessica Srun, Senior Manager of Sustainability Enablement, captures this perfectly:
“Sustainability is a team sport, and what has stood out to me is how the GoGreen team has helped translate enterprise sustainability goals into meaningful and tangible actions for our colleagues. From site-led waste reduction programs, scientists participating in the My Green Lab certification program, or employee education on sustainability, it’s great to see how colleagues across all functions—from R&D to manufacturing to corporate offices—are embedding sustainability into their day-to-day work.”
That translation from global strategy to everyday action is no small feat. What GoGreen does is bring ambitious targets down to earth—making sustainability something colleagues can see, touch, and participate in, regardless of their role or function.
Real Stories of Impact
Some of the most meaningful sustainability work at BMS happens in the field—literally. Ross Kearney, Environmental Manager and GoGreen champion, describes a community initiative that captures the spirit of what employee-driven sustainability can look like:
“We have engaged with a tidy towns committee since 2023—a small volunteer group devoted to keeping their local area litter-free. In 2025, we hosted two events where we supported general clean-ups in the local village: litter picks, weeding, planting flowers. The committee is always extremely appreciative of our support, and the colleagues involved leave with a huge sense of pride having contributed.”
That image—BMS employees on their own time, working alongside community volunteers—is a reminder that a company’s environmental commitments are only as real as the culture that upholds them. And culture is built one action, one conversation, one volunteer afternoon at a time.
BMS is also delivering change at an operational scale. Masayuki Kato, Supervisor of EHS and Engineering PDS, points to a milestone that demonstrates how long-term ambition becomes near-term reality:
“One initiative that made me especially proud was Aichi Site’s transition to carbon neutrality through 100% renewable energy as of April 1, 2026, combined with our ongoing annual tree-planting activities. These actions demonstrate both immediate impact and long-term commitment to environmental sustainability at the site level.”
Site by site, decision by decision—this is what the path to 2030 and 2050 actually looks like.
When Purpose Meets Career
For many BMS employees, sustainability isn’t something they observe from a distance. It’s something that has reshaped how they think about their work and their lives. Jessica Srun reflects:
“Personally, it’s sharpened my awareness of everyday choices—from energy use to waste—and reinforced the idea that individual actions, when scaled across an organization, really do add up.”
That ripple effect—from workplace culture to personal behavior—is one of the most underappreciated outcomes of a strong employee sustainability program. When people are empowered to act with purpose at work, that sense of agency doesn’t stay at the office.
For those considering a career in biopharma, this matters more than ever. People increasingly want to work for organizations whose values align with their own—companies where doing good and doing well are not in conflict. Ross Kearney speaks directly to that:
“At BMS, through groups like GoGreen, you’ll find a company where environmental sustainability is part of our purpose—empowering employees at every level to make a meaningful impact for patients, communities, and the planet.”
This Earth Day, and Every Day After
The theme “Patients & Planet: Healthier Together” captures a truth that science increasingly confirms: environmental health and human health are inseparable. A biopharma company that ignores the health of the planet is, ultimately, working against its own mission. BMS doesn’t ignore it.
From SBTi-validated emissions targets to site-level renewable energy transitions, from community litter picks to My Green Lab certifications, GoGreen brings sustainability to life in every corner of the organization. As Masayuki Kato puts it:
“At BMS, your work can improve patient lives while also helping protect the planet for future generations.”
That’s the promise of a career here. Not just a job, but a contribution. Not just a paycheck, but a purpose. And this Earth Day, as colleagues around the world plant trees, volunteer in their communities, and champion sustainability in their daily work, that purpose is on full display.
The planet doesn’t need one perfect person doing sustainability flawlessly. It needs millions of people doing it consistently, together. At BMS, that’s exactly what GoGreen makes possible—and exactly why Earth Day here is not a single day on the calendar, but a commitment carried into every day that follows.
