Learn about our safety approach to COVID-19 >
Chris Boerner, Executive Vice President, Chief Commercialization Officer, recently shared how he navigated the dot-com recession and made up for gaps in his own experience in order to make “the best of the situation” put before him. In April, Chris was a guest lecturer at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, unexpectedly via video. After speaking with the Wharton MBA students, he reflected on “3 Smart Questions (and 1 Piece of Unsolicited Advice)” that arose during the class. Chris's article includes cogent advice about searching for a job during turbulent times.
Chris and other Bristol Myers Squibb leaders remain eager to learn about candidates’ skills, experiences, and aspirations during the recruitment process even though much of the conversation takes place virtually. We encourage candidates to leverage technology and engage with us so that we can get to know them as potential colleagues no matter the circumstances.

In the first quarter of 2020 alone, Bristol Myers Squibb filled more than 1,200 open positions. Our work in the field of biopharmaceuticals proceeds, with new hires joining our global workforce and continued advancement opportunities becoming available for our current employees. These opportunities exist throughout our company including in procurement, analytics, manufacturing, IT and commercialization.
The same is true for our internship program. Rather than scaling back or cancelling this important program, we transitioned our 2020 summer internships to a virtual format. As Head of Early Career Recruitment Erin Pierpoint put it, shifting our traditional internship program to a virtual experience enables us to continue to provide opportunities “for students to gain essential work experience, which is a key part of our recruiting strategy.”
At Bristol Myers Squibb, our goal has always been to recruit people with diverse backgrounds and a broad range of experiences. Especially during the current COVID-19 pandemic, our talent acquisition team continues to hire, helping to ensure there is no disruption to the supply of our medicines to patients. With patients at the center of everything we do, our mission to transform lives through science is essential–now more than ever. Join us and add your passion, perspectives and skills to this vital work.
